Your Dentist in Bloomington Offers Same-Day Crowns
Dental technology is advancing at the speed of light, and it’s improving the way we do just about everything. Dental crowns, for example, can now be created and placed on an affected tooth faster and more effectively than ever. Your dentist in Bloomington has invested in CEREC, which makes same-day dentistry a possibility!
What’s a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a thin covering, shaped like your tooth, that reaches all the way down to the gum line. A crown is securely bonded on top of a damaged tooth. Dental crowns can be made out of a variety of materials -- including natural looking porcelain/ceramic, gold, metal alloys, and zirconium. For their aesthetic benefits and sturdy restorative ability, your dentist often prefers crowns that are constructed of porcelain.
Crowns commonly serve the following functions:
- Holding together weak, worn, or broken teeth
- Restoring severely decayed teeth when there is not enough room for a filling
- Completing a root canal
- Restoring a dental implant for tooth replacement
- Making significant cosmetic improvements to damaged front teeth
The Magic Behind CEREC
CEREC, or chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics, allows your dentist to plan for, prepare, and place a porcelain/ceramic dental crown in a single visit to our office. It works using CAD/CAM (computer aided design and manufacturing) technology, which helps your dentist sketch out a blueprint of your new crown based on the dimensions of your tooth and surrounding oral structures. CEREC also functions with an in-house milling machine, which crafts the restoration from the comfort of our office. Each CEREC restoration is manufactured from a single block of dental ceramic -- a material that looks, feels, and functions just like your natural tooth enamel.
CEREC vs. Traditional Crowns
The procedure for a traditional crown is broken up into two visits to the dentist. You must wear a temporary crown to cover the prepared tooth in the time between appointments. This temporary restoration has been known to be uncomfortable, visible against the rest of the teeth, and it may break easily -- requiring yet another visit to the dentist.
CEREC eliminates the need for a temporary crown, since the whole process is carried out in a single visit to our office. The technology also integrates with digital scanning, which is far more comfortable than traditional impressions. The conventional method requires you to bite down on a wet hunk of cement for several minutes -- but highly accurate digital scans are completed and then transferred to the CEREC software within seconds.
The benefits of CEREC vs. traditional crowns include…
- No need for a temporary crown
- Porcelain/ceramic restorations blend flawlessly with your surrounding teeth
- Digital scans are more comfortable and accurate
- CEREC crowns last just as long as those prepared the traditional way
